Claude Wathey

Politician and Territorial Leader · 1926–1998

Who is Claude Wathey?

Albert Claudius "Claude" Wathey was born on Sint Maarten on 24 July 1926 into a prominent Caribbean family of Belgian descent that had lived on the island for generations. Educated abroad, he returned home in the 1950s as the Dutch Caribbean was beginning to shape its post-colonial identity, and in 1962 he was elected to the Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles, representing the Dutch Windward Islands of Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius for the Democratic Party. Over nearly three decades in office, Wathey became the dominant political figure on Sint Maarten, presiding over the island's transformation from a quiet, largely agricultural backwater into a major Caribbean tourism destination with one of the highest per-capita incomes in the region. He championed the construction of hotels, cruise facilities, Princess Juliana International Airport, roads, schools, and electrical infrastructure, opening the island to foreign investment. In 1992 he resigned from office in protest of Dutch financial oversight, declaring himself "a proud Caribbean man." Despite a later perjury conviction that many islanders viewed as politically motivated, he remained widely regarded as the architect of modern Sint Maarten until his death in January 1998.
