Who is Samdech Chuon Nath?
Samdech Sangha Raja Jhotañāṇo Chuon Nath was a Cambodian Buddhist monk who rose to become Supreme Patriarch of the Mahanikaya order and one of the most influential Khmer scholars of the twentieth century. He is best known for leading the compilation of the authoritative Khmer-language dictionary, a monumental work that helped standardise and protect the Khmer language during a period of strong foreign influence. He championed the use of Khmer rather than borrowed vocabulary, arguing that the language could grow from its own Pali and Sanskrit roots. He is also widely credited with the lyrics of the Cambodian national anthem, Nokor Reach. His life is remembered as a defence of Khmer language, Buddhism, and national identity through scholarship rather than politics.
