Charlemagne

Carlemany

Frankish King and Emperor (legendary founder in national tradition) · circa 742–814

Who is Charlemagne?

Charlemagne (Carlemany in Catalan) was King of the Franks and later the first Holy Roman Emperor, crowned in Rome in the year 800, ruling over an empire that at its height covered much of Western and Central Europe. Andorran national tradition, enshrined in the country's national anthem 'El Gran Carlemany,' credits Charlemagne with granting the people of the Andorran valleys a charter of liberties in gratitude for their help fighting the Moors during his campaigns in the Iberian Peninsula, an act traditionally seen as the founding moment of Andorran self-government. Historians note that the historical basis for this specific legend is not fully documented and is generally treated as part of Andorra's foundational mythology rather than a proven event, though Charlemagne's Carolingian Empire genuinely did extend its authority into the eastern Pyrenees through the Marca Hispanica in the early ninth century, providing plausible historical context for the tradition. Whatever its precise historical accuracy, Charlemagne remains the central founding figure of Andorran national identity and is honored every year in the country's anthem and civic memory.
