Robert C. "Bob" Allphin Jr.
Amateur Radio DXpedition Leader · circa 1944–2024
Who is Robert C. "Bob" Allphin Jr.?
Robert C. "Bob" Allphin Jr., known by his call sign K4UEE, was an American amateur radio operator and one of the most prolific DXpedition leaders in the hobby's history. The son of a United States Air Force officer, he grew up around the world, was first licensed at age fourteen, and later served in the USAF as an electronic warfare instructor during the Vietnam War before a long career in financial services. After retiring, he devoted himself to organizing and leading expeditions to some of the world's rarest and most inaccessible amateur radio destinations, including Heard Island, South Georgia, Peter I Island, Desecheo, Navassa, and, in February 2018, an ambitious attempt to reach Bouvet Island as co-leader of the 3Y0Z DXpedition, which was aborted at sea after a mechanical failure made a safe landing impossible. In total he took part in 38 DXpeditions, set multiple single-operator world records, and competed in two World Radio Team Championships. He was inducted into the CQ DX Hall of Fame, served on the board of the International DX Association, and chaired the ARRL DX Advisory Committee. Allphin died in February 2024 at the age of 79.
