Who is Betico Croes?
Gilberto François "Betico" Croes was an Aruban political activist and statesman who became the most influential figure in the island's modern political history. Born in Aruba, he trained as a teacher in the Netherlands before returning home to enter local politics, first joining the island council in 1967 as a member of the Aruban People's Party. In 1971 he founded his own party, the People's Electoral Movement (Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo, MEP), which became the vehicle for his decade-long campaign to separate Aruba from the Netherlands Antilles federation. Croes argued that Aruba, with its own economy and identity, deserved autonomous status rather than being governed as one island within a larger Antillean union dominated by Curaçao. His persistent negotiations with the Dutch government led to the 1983 Round Table Conference agreement establishing Status Aparte, which gave Aruba separate constituent-country status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands effective 1 January 1986. Tragically, Croes was severely injured in a car accident on the eve of that transition and never regained consciousness before his death in November 1986. An estimated 40,000 people, more than half the island's population at the time, attended his funeral, and he is remembered today as the father of the Aruban nation, honored each year on Betico Croes Day.
