Who is Antonio Nariño?
Antonio Nariño y Álvarez was a Colombian political and military leader, journalist, and precursor of the independence movement in New Granada, born in Santa Fe de Bogotá. He is best remembered for translating and printing 'The Rights of Man and of the Citizen' (Los Derechos del Hombre y del Ciudadano) in 1794, an act that spread Enlightenment and revolutionary ideas in the Spanish colony and led to his arrest, imprisonment, and the confiscation of his property. A committed advocate of liberty and self-government, he founded newspapers and published political writings that shaped early republican thought. He served in leadership and military roles during the wars of independence, including as a general and briefly as a national leader, though his career was marked by imprisonment, conflict, and periods in Spanish jails. Late in life he served in the political institutions of the new republic of Gran Colombia. He is honored as one of the intellectual founders of Colombian independence and a champion of human rights in the region.
