Who is Anita Mui?
Anita Mui was a Hong Kong Cantopop singer and actress who began performing on stage as a child alongside her sister and rose to stardom after winning a televised singing contest in 1982. Over the following two decades she became one of Cantopop's defining performers, known for her versatile vocal range, theatrical stage persona, and constantly reinvented image, which earned her the nickname the "Madonna of Asia." She released dozens of albums and won numerous Hong Kong music industry awards, while also building a prolific film career that included the acclaimed Rouge (1988) and Executioners (1993), earning recognition as one of Hong Kong's most accomplished actresses as well as singers. Beyond entertainment, she was known for mentoring younger performers and for extensive charitable work, including relief efforts during regional crises. Diagnosed with cervical cancer, she continued performing until shortly before her death in December 2003, holding a series of farewell concerts that became a defining moment in Hong Kong popular culture. She is often referred to as the "Daughter of Hong Kong" for her deep association with the city's cultural identity.
