King of Imerina, Unifier of Madagascar · circa 1745–1810

Who is Andrianampoinimerina?

Andrianampoinimerina, born Ramboasalama around 1745 in Ikaloy in the central highlands of Madagascar, was a Merina noble who rose to become one of the most consequential rulers in Malagasy history. He seized the throne of Imerina in 1787 by deposing his uncle, King Andrianjafy, ending decades of civil war that had fractured the Merina highlands into rival princedoms. Over the following two decades he methodically reunified Imerina, captured the strategic hilltop town of Antananarivo in 1793, and made it his capital in 1794. From this base he extended Merina authority over the neighboring Betsileo, Sihanaka, Bezanozano, and Bara territories, laying the foundation for a kingdom that would eventually claim authority over most of Madagascar. He is remembered not only as a conqueror but as an administrator who organized irrigation, land tenure, and the fanompoana labor-tribute system, and who is credited with numerous kabary (public speeches) and proverbs that Malagasy oral tradition still recites today. His declared ambition that the sea alone would be the limit of his rice fields became a founding image of Malagasy national unity. He died in 1810 and was succeeded by his son, Radama I, who continued the conquests he had begun.
