Arrow (Alphonsus Cassell)

Calypso and Soca Musician · circa 1949–2010

Who is Arrow (Alphonsus Cassell)?

Alphonsus Cassell, known by his stage name Arrow, was a Montserratian calypso and soca musician who became one of the most internationally recognized artists to come out of the Eastern Caribbean. Born on the small volcanic island of Montserrat, he built a decades-long recording and performing career across the Caribbean carnival circuit, blending traditional calypso storytelling with the up-tempo soca sound that came to define modern Caribbean carnival music. His signature song, "Hot Hot Hot," released in the early 1980s, became a global party anthem, later covered by international artists including Buster Poindexter, and remains one of the best-known soca recordings ever produced, still played at celebrations worldwide decades after its release. Arrow continued performing and representing Montserratian culture on international stages even after the Soufriere Hills volcanic eruptions beginning in 1995 devastated much of his home island and displaced most of its population. He remained a proud ambassador for Montserrat until his death in 2010, and is remembered as the island's most famous musical export.
