Statesman and Writer · 1925–2003

Who is Alija Izetbegović?

Alija Izetbegović was a Bosniak politician, philosopher, and writer who served as the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the country's independence in 1992. Born in Bosanski Šamac, he studied law in Sarajevo and became active in Muslim intellectual and cultural circles in Yugoslavia from a young age. He was imprisoned twice by the socialist Yugoslav authorities for his writings and activism, first as a young man and later in the 1980s after publishing his influential books "Islamic Declaration" and "Islam Between East and West," works exploring the place of Islamic thought within modern civilization. Izetbegović co-founded the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) in 1990 and led Bosnia and Herzegovina through its 1992-1995 war and the Dayton Peace Agreement negotiations that ended the conflict. He continued to lead the country's collective presidency through the postwar period, stepping down in 2000. Izetbegović remains one of the most consequential and debated figures in modern Bosnian history, remembered by supporters as the founding statesman of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina and studied widely for his writings on faith, politics, and civilization.
