Agueda Iglesias Johnston

Educator, "Mother of Public Education in Guam" · circa 1898–circa 1984

Who is Agueda Iglesias Johnston?

Agueda Iglesias Johnston was a Chamorro educator widely credited as a central figure in rebuilding and modernizing Guam's public school system, particularly in the years following the devastation of World War II. She worked her way up through the territorial education system, eventually serving in senior educational leadership roles on the island at a time when few Chamorro women held such positions, and she championed the training of local teachers and the expansion of schooling access for Chamorro children across Guam's villages. Her advocacy connected practical postwar reconstruction of school buildings and curricula with a broader push to give Chamorro students access to opportunities long limited under Guam's naval government era. She is honored on Guam today as the namesake of Agueda I. Johnston Middle School in Ordot-Chalan Pago, and she is commonly referred to locally as the "Mother of Public Education" for her decades of service shaping the island's modern education system.
