Who is Adem Demaçi?

Adem Demaçi was a Kosovo Albanian writer and political activist widely known as "Kosovo's Mandela" for spending nearly three decades in Yugoslav prisons because of his advocacy for Albanian national rights. Born in Prishtina, he began writing fiction as a young man, publishing the novel "Gjarpijt e gjakut" ("Serpents of Blood") in the 1950s before his political activities led to repeated arrests. Across several prison terms from the 1950s through the 1980s, totaling roughly twenty-eight years of imprisonment, he became one of the longest-serving political prisoners in Europe at the time, and international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, campaigned for his release. After his final release in 1990, Demaçi remained an outspoken advocate for Kosovo Albanian rights and, during the 1998-1999 Kosovo War, served as the political representative and chief negotiator of the Kosovo Liberation Army in talks with international mediators. He continued writing and remained a respected moral and intellectual voice in Kosovo public life until his death in Prishtina in 2018.
