Who is Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud?
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud was a Qatari Islamic scholar and educator who became one of the most influential religious figures in the country's modern history. Born in 1913, he pursued Islamic studies from a young age and travelled to study under prominent regional scholars, later serving as a qadi (judge) before becoming Qatar's first Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs. He founded the Religious Institute in Doha to train a new generation of Qatari scholars and preachers, helping to formalize religious education in the country during a period of rapid modernization fueled by oil revenues. Known for a moderate scholarly approach and his efforts to reconcile traditional Islamic jurisprudence with the practical needs of a fast-changing society, he became a widely respected voice on matters of religious education and public morality both inside Qatar and across the wider Gulf. After his death in 1997, Qatar named its principal Islamic cultural and outreach center in Doha, the Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center, in his honor, extending his legacy of religious education and interfaith dialogue to later generations.
