Who is Abai Qunanbaiuly (Abai Kunanbayev)?
Abai Qunanbaiuly, commonly known as Abai Kunanbayev, was born near Semey (Semipalatinsk) in eastern Kazakhstan and is regarded as the founder of written Kazakh literature. Raised in an influential clan family, he received both a traditional Islamic madrassa education and exposure to Russian schooling, which gave him access to Russian and European literature. He translated works by Pushkin, Lermontov, and Krylov into Kazakh, introducing his people to European literary forms while writing original poetry rooted in Kazakh oral tradition. His most enduring work is the Qara Sozder ("Book of Words" or "Words of Edification"), a collection of forty-five philosophical prose meditations on morality, education, self-knowledge, and the future of the Kazakh people, composed toward the end of his life. Abai argued for literacy, learning from other cultures without losing Kazakh identity, and hard self-examination. He is honored today as the father of modern Kazakh literary language, with universities, streets, and monuments across Kazakhstan bearing his name, and UNESCO marked the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1995.
