Ice Hockey (NHL) | Full History

The Stanley Cup has been contested every year since 1918 (barring two cancellations), with the Montreal Canadiens the most decorated franchise in the sport's history.

Covers every Stanley Cup Final decided from the founding of the NHL (1917-18 season, first Final played spring 1918) through the 2025-26 season; the pre-NHL "challenge cup" era (1893-1917), when amateur and professional clubs from various leagues challenged for the Cup outside any single league structure, is excluded rather than guessed. Two seasons in scope had no Cup awarded and are omitted from the entries list: 1918-19 (series cancelled mid-way due to the Spanish flu pandemic) and 2004-05 (entire season lost to the NHL lockout). From 1917-18 through 1925-26 the Cup was still occasionally won by a non-NHL club (Victoria Cougars of the WCHL, 1924-25) under the old inter-league challenge format; from 1926-27 onward it has been exclusively an NHL competition. Franchise title counts follow standard NHL-recognized lineage (e.g. Toronto Maple Leafs includes the Toronto Arenas and Toronto St. Patricks eras, and Chicago Blackhawks includes the "Black Hawks" spelling era) but do NOT include Montreal Canadiens' 1915-16 championship, which was won in the NHA one year before the NHL existed โ€” widely-cited "24 Stanley Cups" totals for Montreal include that pre-NHL title, while the 23 shown here reflects only the NHL era covered by this list. New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, and Tampa Bay Lightning are tied at 3 titles each just outside this top-10 leaderboard and are not all shown due to the 10-team cap.
