E pala le ma'a, a e le pala le upu.

“Stones rot, but words do not.”

A promise or a spoken statement outlasts even solid rock — words carry lasting weight and must be honored.

“Words do not break bones.”

Harsh words may sting, but they cannot physically harm the way violence does — encouragement to bear criticism with composure.

Fale-taeao e le afiafi.

“Who sits at home in the morning will not eat in the evening.”

Idleness in the early part of the day leads to want later on — a warning against laziness.

E le fono paʻa mona vae.

“The crab did not consult with its legs before they went off to pinch.”

Young people who act rashly without seeking the counsel of their elders bring trouble on themselves.

Ua se ana.

“It is like a cave — something promised, but never given.”

Describes an empty promise, something spoken of but never delivered.

E toa e le loto, a e pa le noo.

“Strong in heart, but broken in the back.”

Said of someone whose willpower and courage exceed their physical strength.

Describes someone with no fixed home, drifting without belonging to a family or place.

“Blessed is the moon, which goes away and returns; men die and do not return.”

A lament on human mortality, contrasting the moon's endless cycle with a person's single, unrepeatable life.

A person who ignores words may still respond to a firm, direct action.

It is better to have a small plantation of your own than to be joined uneasily with another's — a call for independence.

“Not a word stumbles.”

Praise for a skilled orator whose speech flows without hesitation or error.

“Let your feet be those of Vaeau.”

A call to move swiftly, invoking the legendary traveler Vaeau who journeyed to the heavens and back in a single day.

Ua lelea le laumea.

“The dry leaves are carried away by the wind.”

Used of a defeated group scattering, driven off like leaves before a gust.

Ua o le malaga i Oloolo.

“It is like the journey of Oloolo.”

Applied to something that was planned and talked about but never actually carried out.

Ua ola ipiniu.

“They used cups for fish-baskets.”

A remark on times of scarcity — so little was caught that ordinary cups sufficed to hold the catch.

Describes a household or person whose hands are never idle and who consequently thrives.

A father's blessing for his son to grow up quickly and strongly, as plants do in fertile wetland.

“Like a canoe running before the wind.”

Describes anything moving quickly and effortlessly, carried forward by favorable circumstances.

Ua usiusi-faʻavaʻasavili.

“To obey as readily as a canoe runs before the wind.”

Praise for someone whose obedience is immediate and complete, without resistance.

Ua le seʻi mau se ala vaʻa.

“Why not steer a straight course?”

A criticism of a speech or plan that wanders without ever coming to a clear point.

O le upega e fili i le po, 'ae tatala i le ao.

“The fishing net is knotted at night, but untangled in the morning.”

Problems that seem tangled and hopeless in the dark of trouble become clear and solvable with time and daylight.

E lele le toloa ae maʻau i le auvai.

“The toloa duck flies far, but always returns to the water.”

No matter how far a person travels or wanders, they will always return to their roots and home.

“Nothing is more important than your family.”

Family stands above all other priorities and possessions in Samoan life.

Just as strands of fau bark fiber are twisted together to make strong rope, people joined together become strong — unity is strength.

“Friends in the good days, family in the hard days.”

Companions are plentiful when times are easy, but only true kin remain loyal through hardship.

Ua o gatasi le futia ma le umele.

“While the fisherman works the trolling hook, others must paddle hard alongside.”

Success requires everyone to play their part together, just as fishing from a canoe needs both the line and the paddlers working as one.

“The journey arrives quickly when we paddle the canoe together.”

Shared effort reaches its goal far faster than any one person working alone.

People separated by distance or disagreement can still be reunited in time.

“A person belongs to their family, and a person belongs to their identity.”

A person's worth and place in the world are inseparable from their family lineage and genealogical identity.
