Tonga Leadership (2)

Traditional leadership of Tonga in to and English — each with its meaning and source.

“Tonga for the Tongans. If Tonga remains as it is now, it is not because of our intelligence or our knowledge, but only because we are with God — Tonga is dedicated to God.”

Delivered at the close of the 1875 Parliament that adopted Tonga's founding constitution, this declaration framed the young kingdom's survival and unity as inseparable from Christian faith, and became a lasting touchstone of Tongan national identity.

“My people, I want to tell you today that I have made a decision that no woman has a right to do, but I have made it as Queen: we will support England in the war today until the end of the war.”

Queen Sālote's 1939 personal call for Tongan volunteers to fight for the British Empire in the Second World War; nearly every eligible Tongan man volunteered for the Tonga Defence Force in response.
