الجار قبل الدار.

“The neighbor before the house.”

Choose who lives around you before you choose where you live — community matters more than the building itself.

اللي فات مات.

“What has passed has died.”

Let go of the past; dwelling on what is over serves no purpose.

القرد بعين أمه غزال.

“In its mother's eyes, the monkey looks like a gazelle.”

A parent sees beauty and worth in their own child regardless of how others judge them.

إيد وحدة ما تصفق.

“One hand alone cannot clap.”

Cooperation is necessary; no one accomplishes great things entirely alone.

اللي بيته من زجاج ما يرشق الناس بالحجار.

“Those whose house is made of glass should not throw stones at people.”

Do not criticize others for faults you share yourself.

الصبر مفتاح الفرج.

“Patience is the key to relief.”

Enduring hardship with patience eventually opens the way to ease and resolution.

دق الحديد وهو حامي.

“Strike the iron while it is hot.”

Act at the right moment, while conditions are favorable, or the chance will be lost.

كثرة الطباخين تحرق الطبخة.

“Too many cooks burn the dish.”

Too many people trying to lead the same task ruin the outcome.

العين ما تعلى عن الحاجب.

“The eye cannot rise above the eyebrow.”

Know and respect your place; some limits and hierarchies should not be overstepped.

خير الكلام ما قل ودل.

“The best speech is that which is short and meaningful.”

Value concise, purposeful words over long, empty talk.

الطيور على أشكالها تقع.

“Birds fall in with their own kind.”

People naturally gather with others who share their nature and habits.

الأقارب عقارب.

“Relatives are scorpions.”

A warning that envy and betrayal can come even from one's own family, so trust must still be earned.

الوقت كالسيف إن لم تقطعه قطعك.

“Time is like a sword: if you do not cut it, it cuts you.”

Use your time productively, or it will work against you.

من جد وجد، ومن زرع حصد.

“He who strives, succeeds; and he who sows, reaps.”

Effort brings results, and the work you put in determines what you receive.

اللي يزرع الشوك ما يقطف العنب.

“He who plants thorns does not harvest grapes.”

Harmful actions do not produce good outcomes; you reap what you sow.

من شابه أباه ما ظلم.

“He who resembles his father has done no wrong.”

Children naturally take after their parents in character, and that is no fault of theirs.

الطبع غلب التطبع.

“Nature overcomes conditioning.”

A person's true underlying character eventually shows through, however much it was trained or restrained.

إن غاب القط العب يا فار.

“When the cat is away, play, mouse.”

People act freely, and sometimes carelessly, once the one who holds them accountable is gone.

خالف تُعرف.

“Be different, and you will be known.”

Standing apart from the crowd is what makes a person memorable and recognized.

العاقل تكفيه الإشارة.

“For the wise, a mere gesture is enough.”

An intelligent person understands a hint without needing everything spelled out.

من قلة الخيل شدوا على الكلاب سروج.

“For lack of horses, they put saddles on dogs.”

When good options are unavailable, people are forced to rely on poor substitutes.

القناعة كنز لا يفنى.

“Contentment is a treasure that never runs out.”

Being satisfied with what one has is a form of wealth that can never be depleted.

الجمل ما يشوف عوجة رقبته.

“The camel cannot see the crook in its own neck.”

People often fail to notice their own flaws even while they readily see the flaws of others.

الديك الفصيح من البيضة يصيح.

“The eloquent rooster crows from within the egg.”

True talent and character reveal themselves early in life.

يوم عسل ويوم بصل.

“A day of honey, a day of onion.”

Life alternates between sweetness and hardship; both are to be expected.

من عاشر قوماً أربعين يوماً صار منهم.

“He who lives among a people for forty days becomes one of them.”

Prolonged closeness to a community shapes a person to share its ways and identity.

يا داخل بين البصلة وقشرتها ما إلك إلا ريحتها.

“He who comes between the onion and its peel gets nothing but its smell.”

Meddling in matters that are not your own, especially family disputes, brings only trouble, no benefit.

اللي انكوى بالشوربة الحامية ينفخ عالزبادي البارد.

“He who was scalded by hot soup blows on cold yogurt.”

A painful past experience makes a person overly cautious, even about things that pose no real danger.

كل ممنوع مرغوب.

“Everything forbidden is desired.”

People are naturally drawn to what is restricted or off-limits.

اسأل مجرب ولا تسأل طبيب.

“Ask someone experienced, not a doctor.”

Practical, lived experience is often worth more than theoretical expertise.

الضيف ضيف الله.

“The guest is God's guest.”

A guest must be honored and cared for as a sacred duty, reflecting the Bedouin and Arab tradition of hospitality.

كل شيء يهون إلا الكرامة.

“Everything is bearable except one's dignity.”

A person can endure most hardships, but their honor and self-respect must never be sacrificed.

اللي إله ظهر ما ينضرب على بطنه.

“He who has support at his back does not get struck in the stomach.”

Having allies and support protects a person from being harmed or taken advantage of.

لسانك حصانك، إن صنته صانك وإن خنته خانك.

“Your tongue is your horse: if you guard it, it guards you; if you betray it, it betrays you.”

Careful, honest speech protects and serves you; careless or dishonest words come back to harm you.

البعيد عن العين بعيد عن القلب.

“Far from the eye, far from the heart.”

Distance and absence gradually weaken emotional closeness between people.

اللي على راسه بطحة يحسس عليها.

“He who has a wound on his head keeps touching it.”

A person with a guilty conscience or hidden fault reacts defensively whenever the subject comes near.

رب ضارة نافعة.

“Many a harm brings a hidden benefit.”

What appears to be misfortune can turn out, in time, to be a blessing in disguise.

الجود من الموجود.

“Generosity is giving from what you have.”

True hospitality is offering what is available with a warm heart, not waiting until one has abundance.
