ما لك غير خشمك لو كان عوج

“All you have is your nose, even if it's bent.”

You must accept and make the best of what you actually have, since it is the only thing that is truly yours.

ذنب الجلب ما ينعدل

“You can't straighten a dog's tail.”

A person's core nature or bad habits cannot be permanently changed, no matter how hard you try.

الناس في زلزلة والمرأة تدور رجل

“The world is in turmoil, and the woman is still looking for a husband.”

Said of someone chasing a trivial personal goal while everyone around them faces a much bigger crisis.

اللي مايطول العنب حامض عنه يقول

“Whoever can't reach the grapes says they are sour.”

People often belittle what they cannot have, making excuses to hide their own failure or envy.

علمناهم على الطرارة سبقونا على البيبان

“We taught them how to beg, and they beat us to the doors.”

A warning about ingratitude — those you help can surpass or outmaneuver you using the very skill you gave them.

اللي في الجدر يطلعه الملاس

“What is in the pot, the spoon will dig it out.”

The truth always comes out eventually, no matter how well it is hidden.

مد رجولك على قد لحافك

“Stretch your legs only as far as your blanket reaches.”

Live within your means and never spend more than you actually have.

صام صام وفطر على بصلة

“He fasted all day, then broke his fast on an onion.”

Used when a long effort ends in a disappointing, underwhelming reward.

طرار ويتشرط

“A beggar, yet still picky.”

Said of someone in a weak position who is still unreasonably demanding — the Bahraini version of 'beggars can't be choosers.'

يحسدون الميت على موتة الجمعة

“They envy the dead man for dying on a Friday.”

Describes extreme, almost absurd envy — begrudging someone even the smallest fortune, such as dying on a blessed day.

ما يحك ظهرك إلا ظفرك

“Nothing scratches your back like your own fingernail.”

No one looks after your interests as well as you look after them yourself; self-reliance is best.

مش بوزك

“Wipe your mouth.”

A blunt way of saying 'don't even think about it' — used to shut down an unrealistic wish or request.

“A monkey looks like a gazelle in his mother's eye.”

A parent, or anyone, naturally sees their own as more beautiful or better than everyone else's, regardless of the truth.

ريجك في بوزك حلو

“Your own saliva tastes sweet in your own mouth.”

People naturally favor and overvalue what belongs to them, including their own opinions and family.

صبري يا حريقة سار الى ان يجيش الماي من لحنينية

“Fire in Saar, and the water must come all the way from Hunainiya.”

Said whenever help or a solution is painfully slow to arrive, recalling the days when firefighting water had to be hauled a long distance between villages.

وش ليش بالبحر واهواله او رزق الله على السيف

“Why brave the sea and its dangers, when God's blessings are already on the shore?”

Advises choosing the safer, simpler path when a good living can be made without unnecessary risk.

أومرك ولا أوامر الحكومة

“I would rather take your orders than the government's orders.”

A polite, half-joking way of agreeing to do a personal favor for someone, said when asked to do a task.

برز الدواء قبل لا تعطي الفلعة

“Get the antiseptic ready before you throw the punch.”

A wry comment on someone who plans for the consequences of an action far too early, or too cautiously.

عين عذاري تسقي البعيد وتنسى القريب

“Adhari Spring waters what is far and forgets what is near.”

Named after Bahrain's famous Adhari freshwater spring, this proverb criticizes someone who is generous to strangers or distant people while neglecting their own family or neighbors close by.

ما يملأ عين ابن آدم إلا التراب

“Nothing fills the eye of the son of Adam except dust.”

Human greed and desire have no natural limit; only death, when the body returns to the earth, finally puts an end to wanting more.

حشر مع الناس عيد

“Join the crowd, and it becomes like a feast.”

Being part of a group turns even an ordinary day into something joyful; there is comfort and celebration in belonging.

من سبق لبق

“Whoever arrives first is served first.”

Those who act quickly and early reap the rewards, while those who delay are left with less.

الأعور بين العميان ملك

“Among the blind, the one-eyed man is king.”

Someone with only modest ability can still stand out and lead when everyone around them has even less.

الطول طول النخلة والعقل عقل صخلة

“Tall as a palm tree, but with the mind of a young goat.”

Describes someone who is physically impressive but lacking in sense or wisdom; height is not the same as intelligence.

ما يعرف كوعه من بوعه

“He doesn't know his elbow from his wrist.”

Describes someone who is completely inexperienced or clueless, unable to tell even the most basic things apart.

يا خبر اليوم بفلوس بكره ببلاش

“The news you pay for today, you get for free tomorrow.”

Something valuable now, such as fresh information, loses its worth once time passes and everyone already knows it.

اللي يجي بلا عزيمة يطلع بلا حشمة

“He who comes without an invitation leaves without respect.”

Someone who inserts themselves where they were not invited should not expect to be treated with special courtesy.

إن لم تكن ذئباً أكلتك الذئاب

“If you are not a wolf, the wolves will eat you.”

In a harsh and competitive world, you must be strong and assertive, or ruthless people will take advantage of you.

اللي يبي الصلاة ما تفوته

“He who truly wants to pray will not miss it.”

Genuine determination always finds the time and way to do what matters; excuses do not hold up against real intention.

إذا طاح الجمل كثرت سكاكينه

“When the camel falls, its knives multiply.”

When someone loses their power, wealth, or fortune, many people who once feared or respected them suddenly turn against them.

إذا غاب القطو العب يا فار

“When the cat is away, play, mouse.”

People take advantage of freedom or a lack of supervision to do as they please, the Bahraini equivalent of when the cat is away, the mice will play.

تطلع عليك أغلى من بيع السوق

“It ends up costing you more than buying it at the market.”

Warns against a shortcut or do-it-yourself alternative that seems cheaper but ends up costing more than simply buying the real thing.

الزين زين لو قعد من النوم والشين شين لو كحل عيونه

“The handsome stays handsome even fresh out of sleep, and the plain stays plain even with kohl on his eyes.”

True quality shows through in any condition, while a lack of it cannot be fully hidden by decoration or effort.

بغيناك عون صرت فرعون

“We wanted you as a helper, and you became a pharaoh.”

Warns against giving someone a position of trust or support only to see them abuse that power and turn into a tyrant.

ما يعجبه العجب ولا الصوم في رجب

“Nothing impresses him, not even a wonder, nor fasting in Rajab.”

Describes someone who can never be satisfied or pleased, no matter what is offered to them.

طارت الطيور بأرزاقها

“The birds have flown off, each with its own share.”

Each person's fortune and opportunity is already apportioned to them; a chance that has passed is gone for good.

فات الفوت ما ينفع الصوت

“Once it has passed, shouting is no use.”

There is no point in complaining or crying out once an opportunity or moment has already slipped away.

عادت حليمة لعادتها القديمة

“Halima went back to her old habits.”

A person's true nature always resurfaces sooner or later, no matter how much they seem to have changed — the Bahraini and wider Arab equivalent of 'a leopard cannot change its spots.'

اسأل مجرب ولا تسأل طبيب

“Ask the experienced, not the doctor.”

Practical, lived experience is often more trustworthy and useful than formal expertise alone.

روح بعيد وارجع سالم

“Go the long way and come back safe.”

A longer, more cautious path is worth more than a risky shortcut; safety matters more than speed.

كل من ينظر للناس بعين طبعه

“Everyone looks at people through the eye of their own nature.”

People judge others based on their own character and experiences, seeing the world through the lens of who they themselves are.

هذا الميدان يا حميدان

“This is the arena, Humaidan.”

Said to challenge someone to prove their ability when the moment of truth arrives, roughly equivalent to 'here is your chance, let's see what you can do.'

أراد أن يكحّلها فأعماها

“He meant to line her eyes with kohl, but blinded her instead.”

A well-intentioned attempt to improve or help with something ends up making it worse, the cure turning out worse than the ailment.

من اعتمد على جاره أصبح ريقه ناشف

“He who relies on his neighbor ends up with a dry mouth.”

Depending on others to meet your needs leaves you thirsty and disappointed; self-reliance is essential.

عند البطون تعمى العيون

“Where bellies are concerned, eyes go blind.”

When basic needs like food and gain are at stake, people can become blind to what is right, overlooking faults or wrongdoing to satisfy them.

من فوق هلله هلله ومن تحت يعلم الله

“On the surface it is all 'God, God,' but what lies beneath, only God knows.”

A person may appear pious and righteous on the outside while hiding a very different truth within, one that only God can see.

أيوب يوم ابتلي قوّى عزمه بالصبر

“When Ayyub was afflicted, he strengthened his resolve with patience.”

Drawing on the Islamic tradition of the Prophet Ayyub (Job), this saying holds that true strength in hardship comes from patient, steady endurance.

اللي يبي الدح ما يقول أح

“He who wants to push through does not say 'ouch.'”

Achieving something difficult requires enduring effort and discomfort without complaint.

النخلة أكرم من راعيها

“The palm tree is more generous than its caretaker.”

When a palm tree is properly tended, it rewards the care given to it with such abundance that its generosity seems to exceed even that of the person tending it — said of anyone or anything that gives back more than was put in.

النخلة لأكارها والحضرة لبوارها

“The palm tree belongs to its farmer, and the fish-trap belongs to its boatman.”

The reward for something rightfully goes to whoever actually does the work of tending or running it, not to an idle owner — invoking Bahrain's two traditional livelihoods, date farming and hadra (fixed fish-trap) fishing.
