Plant Care Guides 🌿
23 guides: kill-proof beginner plants, low-light picks, pet-safe options, air-purifying, flowering, plus watering + light + repotting fundamentals.
Start with a plant you can\'t kill
Most people who "kill every plant" start with the wrong plant (fiddle leaf fig is the classic mistake). Start with snake plant, pothos, or ZZ plant. They tolerate low light, missed waterings, and neglect. After 6 months of not killing one, you\'re officially a plant person.
The biggest killer is overwatering. Stick your finger 2" into the soil — if it\'s wet, don\'t water. If dry, water thoroughly until it runs out drainage holes. That\'s it. Ignore calendar-based watering schedules.
Pet-safe options: Spider plant, Boston fern, African violet, areca palm. Toxic to cats/dogs: lilies (lethal to cats!), monstera, pothos (ironic, most popular), ZZ plant. Check every plant you buy if you have pets.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
The ultimate kill-proof plant
Tolerates low light, high light, bad soil, missed waterings. Purifies air overnight (unusual — most plants do it during day). Water every 3-4 weeks. Only kills from overwatering. The plant to buy first.
How to water houseplants: the only rule
Stop watering on schedule
Rule: check soil, not calendar. Stick finger 2" into soil. If dry, water. If damp, wait. When you do water: water thoroughly until it runs out drainage holes. Empty saucer after 30 min. Overwatering kills 90% of houseplants.
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Trailing vines, zero fuss
Grows in water OR soil. Thrives in low to bright indirect light. Water when top 2" dry. Propagates by cuttings dropped in water — grows roots in 2 weeks. Golden, marble queen, neon, pearl & jade varieties all share same easy care.
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas)
Forgive-anything glossy green
Waxy, ribbed leaves. Tolerates 2-3 weeks without water (rhizomes store water). Low light OK, bright indirect better. Toxic to pets — keep up high. Almost never needs repotting.
Plant light: direct, indirect, bright, low
What those words actually mean
DIRECT: sun rays touch leaves (south window, 6+ hours). BRIGHT INDIRECT: bright room, sun rays don't hit leaves (east/west near window). MEDIUM: bright-ish but far from window. LOW: you can read but it's dim — only snake plant, ZZ, aglaonema tolerate.
7 common plant problems + fixes
Yellow leaves, brown tips, drooping...
1) Yellow leaves = overwatering usually. 2) Brown leaf tips = low humidity or tap water chlorine. 3) Drooping = thirsty or cold. 4) Crispy leaves = too much sun. 5) No growth = needs fertilizer. 6) White fuzz on soil = fungus, repot in dry soil. 7) Tiny flies = fungus gnats — let soil dry + yellow sticky traps.
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum)
Pet-safe + produces babies
Arching green+white stripes. Produces "spiderettes" (baby plants) on stems you can cut and root. Pet-safe. Tolerates neglect but thrives with regular water. Best air-purifier per NASA study.
Water propagation: free plants from cuttings
Pothos, philodendron, monstera, tradescantia
Cut below a node. Drop in clean glass of water, indirect light. Change water weekly. Roots in 2-4 weeks. Once roots are 2-3" long, plant in soil (keep moist first month). Free infinite plants.
Philodendron Brasil
Pothos-relative, variegated green/yellow
Lime-green leaves with yellow stripe center. Care identical to pothos — medium light, water weekly. Trails or climbs. Propagates easy. A solid "if you like pothos" upgrade.
When and how to repot
Every 1-3 years
Signs: roots growing out drainage hole, plant dries out in 2 days, stunted growth, plant tips over. How: size up 2" bigger pot (not bigger — root rot risk). Fresh soil. Gently tease roots. Water thoroughly. Spring is ideal.
Peace Lily vs Snake Plant: which for beginners?
Clear winner for 95% of people
Snake plant: nearly impossible to kill, tolerates neglect + low light, no flowers. Peace lily: prettier (flowers), droops when thirsty (clear signal), needs more light. Beginner: snake plant. If you want flowers and will water regularly: peace lily.
Monstera Deliciosa
The iconic split-leaf
Thrives on bright indirect light + weekly water + humid air (60%+). Needs moss pole or trellis as it matures to get the dramatic fenestrations (holes). Toxic to pets. Dramatic statement plant.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
White flowers + air purifier
Flowers white spathes year-round. Droops dramatically when thirsty — perfect "tell-me-when-to-water" plant. Tolerates low light but needs medium for flowers. Toxic to pets.
Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)
Colorful leaves, low-light tolerant
Silver, pink, red, green variegated varieties. Tolerates very low light (one of few). Water when top inch dry. Toxic to pets. Best "shaded corner" plant.
Kitchen window herbs: basil, mint, parsley
Free herbs, always fresh
South or east window. Buy live herb plants from supermarket — repot into bigger pot immediately. Water when top inch dry. Harvest often (encourages growth). Basil in bright sun, mint tolerates less. Chives, thyme, rosemary too.
Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica)
Glossy burgundy leaves
Burgundy-red or green-black glossy leaves. Bright indirect light, water when top 2" dry. Grows up to 6ft indoors. Wipe leaves monthly. Varieties: burgundy, tineke, ruby.
Phalaenopsis Orchid
Flowers for 2-3 months at a time
Watered with ice cubes weekly (3 cubes). Bright indirect light. Transparent pot so roots photosynthesize. Re-blooms yearly if given the right care (cooler temps 55°F for 2-4 weeks triggers bloom spike).
Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia)
Tropical statement · big leaves
Banana-like huge leaves. Bright direct light (a few hours). Water weekly. Grows up to 6-7ft. Rarely flowers indoors. Dramatic tropical vibe. Nicolai = larger, reginae = smaller orange-flowered species.
Growing tomatoes: the basics
Outdoor edible gardening 101
Full sun (6+ hours), well-drained soil, regular water (1" per week). Stake or cage early. Varieties: determinate (bush, set size) vs indeterminate (vines, keeps growing). Best producers: cherry, roma, heirloom Brandywine. Start seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost.
Boston Fern
Lush, pet-safe, humidity-loving
Classic Victorian fern. Loves 50%+ humidity, bright indirect light, consistently moist soil. Pet-safe. Perfect for bathrooms with windows. Needs misting or humidifier in dry winters.
Succulents: echeveria, haworthia, jade
Sun + drought lovers
Need BRIGHT direct sun (south window or grow light). Water ONCE soil is bone-dry, then soak thoroughly. Biggest killer: overwatering. Use succulent soil mix. Good for desks with direct sun.
Calathea orbifolia / ornata
Prayer-plant drama
Stunning patterned leaves that fold up at night ("praying"). Demands high humidity 60%+, filtered water (tap can brown edges), indirect light. Will tell you it's unhappy by browning instantly. Worth it for the leaves.
Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)
Drama queen — high reward, high risk
Large violin-shaped leaves. Wants bright indirect light, consistent water (never soggy), stable location (hates being moved), 50%+ humidity. Drops leaves if stressed. Instagram-famous but genuinely difficult.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my plant's leaves turning yellow?▼
Most commonly: overwatering. Soil stays wet → roots suffocate → leaves yellow. Fix: let soil dry out between waterings, check drainage. Other causes: low light, nutrient deficiency, natural leaf aging.
How often should I water houseplants?▼
There is no universal schedule. Check soil with your finger: if top 2" is dry, water. If wet, wait. Snake plant + ZZ: every 3-4 weeks. Pothos + monstera: every 7-10 days. Calatheas + ferns: keep consistently moist. Succulents: every 2-3 weeks after soil fully dries.
What's "bright indirect light"?▼
Bright room where the sun's rays don't directly hit the plant's leaves. Example: a few feet from an east or south window. Most houseplants thrive here. "Low light" = you can read in the room, but corners are dim — only snake plant, ZZ, aglaonema survive.
How do I repot a plant?▼
Signs you need to: roots growing out of drainage hole, plant tips over, water runs through pot too fast. How: pot 1-2" bigger (not more), fresh potting mix, gently loosen roots, water thoroughly. Spring is ideal. Don't repot a stressed plant.
How do I propagate plants in water?▼
Pothos, philodendron, monstera, tradescantia work great. Cut just below a node (leaf join). Drop in water in a jar — bright indirect light. Change water weekly. Roots in 2-4 weeks. Once roots are 2-3", pot in soil (keep moist first 2 weeks).
