Ratings are a weighted blend of Metacritic critic score (40%), OpenCritic score (30%), and a longevity factor — games scored at launch that aged poorly are adjusted down over time. A game that launched at 85 and has an active community 5 years later scores differently than one that peaked at 90 and went dead in 6 months.
Genre classification is practical, not dogmatic. Many great games resist single-genre labels: Hades is a roguelite AND action AND narrative game. We list each title under the genre most useful for discovery — if you’re looking for “good roguelites” it’ll show up there. The full genre set is in the tags.
Buying tip: PC via Steam, Epic, or GOG almost always offers better long-term value than console digital stores — games go on deep sale regularly, mods extend life, and you own your library. For console exclusives, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch have the strongest single-player catalogs in 2026.
By Metacritic all-time: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64, 99), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1, 98), Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3/360, 98), SoulCalibur (Dreamcast, 98), Soul Blade (PS, 98). More recent critical peaks: The Last of Us Part I (98), Elden Ring (96), God of War Ragnarök (94), Baldur's Gate 3 (96 on PC).
For beginners: The Witcher 3 (2015) — open world, narrative-driven, manageable combat. Final Fantasy XVI (2023) if you prefer action combat with a cinematic story. Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) if you're willing to spend time learning systems (highest ceiling, steepest start). Avoid Dark Souls as a first RPG — it rewards mastery but punishes newcomers.
For most players who game 3+ years: yes. A $800–1000 PC mid-range build outperforms current-gen consoles, lasts 4–5 years with one GPU upgrade, runs every multiplat, mods extend game life, and Steam sales regularly put AAA games at 70–80% off. Consoles win for: exclusive franchises (Zelda, Spider-Man, God of War), simplicity, and couch play.
Top offline single-player: Elden Ring (60–80h), Red Dead Redemption 2 (50–80h), Disco Elysium (20–40h), Hollow Knight (40h), Stardew Valley (50h+), Celeste (10–15h), Outer Wilds (15h, do not spoil). These work on plane mode and have zero always-online requirements.
Depends on use case: PC (gaming + work + flexibility), PS5 (best single-player exclusives: Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon), Nintendo Switch 2 (announced 2025, releases 2026 — best handheld + Nintendo exclusives), Xbox Series X (best if you want Game Pass value). If budget is a concern: PC gaming starts at $400–500 with older used parts and offers the most value over 3+ years.
