The story of New Zealand

New Zealand , Aotearoa, 'the land of the long white cloud' in te reo Māori , was among the last major landmasses on Earth settled by humans. East Polynesian voyagers arrived by ocean-going canoe circa 1280 CE and developed the distinct Māori culture, organised into iwi (tribes) across the North and South Islands. European contact began with Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642 and British navigator James Cook's detailed charting in 1769, opening an era of whaling, missionaries, and settlement. On 6 February 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, founding the nation as a British colony while remaining a contested and still-debated cornerstone of Māori-Crown relations. New Zealand became a self-governing Dominion in 1907 and gained full legislative independence in 1947. Along the way it broke global ground , the first self-governing country to grant women the vote, in 1893 , and later declared itself nuclear-free in 1987.
