The story of Martinique

Martinique was first settled by Arawak and later Carib (Kalinago) peoples, who knew the island as Madinina, 'island of flowers'. Christopher Columbus sighted it in 1493, but permanent French colonization began only in 1635, when Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc landed and established a settlement, quickly turning the island into a sugar-plantation economy built on enslaved African labour. Britain seized the island several times during the 18th and early 19th centuries, but it always reverted to France. Slavery was abolished on 22 May 1848, a date still marked annually. In 1902, the catastrophic eruption of Mount Pelee destroyed the former capital, Saint-Pierre, killing nearly its entire population and shifting economic and political life permanently to Fort-de-France. In 1946, Martinique's status changed from colony to a full Overseas Department of France, and later an Overseas Region, making its residents French and European Union citizens. Today Martinique blends French administration with a distinct Creole culture, language, and literary tradition that produced some of the 20th century's most influential postcolonial thinkers.
