The story of Monaco

Monaco's story begins as a strategic outcrop on the Ligurian coast, first fortified by Genoese colonists in 1191. In 1297, Francesco Grimaldi and his men, disguised as Franciscan monks, seized the fortress, beginning a dynasty that has ruled Monaco almost continuously ever since , one of the longest-reigning royal houses in Europe.
