The story of Latvia

Latvia's story begins with ancient Baltic tribes , Latgalians, Selonians, Semigallians and Curonians , who settled the shores of the Baltic Sea and the Daugava river by the first millennium CE. In 1201 the German Bishop Albert founded Riga, and the Livonian Crusade drew the region into the Catholic and later Hanseatic trading world for centuries. Control passed through Livonian, Polish-Lithuanian, Swedish, and finally Russian Imperial hands as regional powers rose and fell. A 19th-century national awakening, fed by folklore collection and a new Latvian-language press, gave the Latvian people a modern national identity. On 18 November 1918, amid the collapse of the Russian and German empires, the Republic of Latvia declared independence. That freedom was crushed by Soviet and Nazi occupations from 1940 to 1991 , decades of deportation and repression. Latvians resisted through culture, most memorably in the peaceful 1989 Baltic Way and the 1991 Singing Revolution, which restored independence without a shot fired. Today Latvia is an EU and NATO member proud of its forests, its Art Nouveau capital, and a literary and song tradition that helped carry the nation through occupation.

8. 1989

   The Baltic Way: a human chain of roughly two million people links Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn.

9. 1991

   Independence restored on 21 August after the Singing Revolution.

10. 2004

    Latvia joins the European Union and NATO.
