The story of Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia's story begins with indigenous settlement: Arawak peoples arrived first, followed by Kalinago (Carib) peoples, who knew the island as "Iouanalao." European contact came around the turn of the 16th century, though the exact date of first sighting is disputed among historians. What followed was one of the Caribbean's most contested colonial tug-of-wars: France and Britain fought over the island repeatedly between the 17th and early 19th centuries, each side alternately planting settlements, sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans, and naval garrisons. Saint Lucia was administered as part of the British Windward Islands, gained internal self-government in the 1960s, and achieved full independence on 22 February 1979, remaining a Commonwealth realm.
