The story of Jersey

Jersey's story begins as part of the Duchy of Normandy, which passed into the hands of the English Crown in 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy, became King of England. When King John lost mainland Normandy to France in 1204, Jersey and the other Channel Islands chose to remain loyal to the English Crown, becoming self-governing possessions rather than colonies , a status that endures today as a Crown Dependency, never part of the United Kingdom itself. For centuries Jersey built its identity on maritime trade, privateering, and a distinct legal and linguistic culture rooted in Norman law and the Jèrriais language. The island repelled the last serious French invasion attempt at the Battle of Jersey in 1781, but faced its darkest chapter in the 20th century: it was the only British territory occupied by Nazi Germany, from July 1940 until Liberation Day on 9 May 1945. In the postwar decades Jersey rebuilt around tourism, agriculture (the Jersey cow), and finance, growing into one of the world's leading offshore financial centres while working to preserve its shrinking native language and Norman-French heritage.
