The story of Algeria
Algeria's story stretches back to the ancient Berber kingdom of Numidia, unified around 202 BCE under King Masinissa after the Second Punic War, and later absorbed into Rome, then Vandal and Byzantine rule, before the Arab conquests of the 7th century brought Islam and the Arabic language. In 1516 the Regency of Algiers formed under Ottoman suzerainty, ruled by deys who built Algiers into a formidable Mediterranean power. France invaded in 1830 and formally annexed the territory in 1848, beginning 132 years of colonial rule marked by mass European settlement and displacement of the indigenous population. The National Liberation Front (FLN) launched the Algerian War of Independence on 1 November 1954, a brutal conflict that ended with the Evian Accords and independence on 5 July 1962. Since then Algeria has navigated one-party rule, a devastating civil war in the 1990s, and the 2019 Hirak protest movement, while remaining North Africa's largest country and a major producer of oil and natural gas.
