The story of Aruba

Long before Europeans arrived, Aruba was home to the Caquetío, an Arawak-speaking people who left behind petroglyphs, pottery, and stone tools still found across the island. Spanish navigator Alonso de Ojeda reached Aruba in 1499, and the Spanish crown later deported much of the population to Hispaniola to work in mines, largely leaving the island to livestock ranching. The Dutch West India Company took control in 1636, folding Aruba into a wider Caribbean network of Dutch possessions. A brief 19th-century gold rush gave way to a much bigger economic shift when the Lago oil refinery opened near San Nicolas in the late 1920s, drawing workers from across the Caribbean and turning the island cosmopolitan. Aruba was folded into the Netherlands Antilles federation in 1954, but a strong local independence movement pushed for separation, and on 1 January 1986 Aruba achieved "status aparte" , becoming its own self-governing country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, distinct from Curaçao and the other islands. As the oil refinery declined, Aruba rebuilt its economy around tourism, and today it is known for its beaches, dry desert landscape, and a multicultural population drawn from dozens of nations.
